My Thoughts and adventures about my Greenhouse Course
Can an old dog learn new tricks? That’s what I’m asking myself lately. That’s what I’ve been asking myself about the Greenhouse course I”ll be taking soon. Learning new things is not as easy as it used to be. When I was younger it was far more easy to devote my attention to class work when I was a student in school. Now as an adult, I find myself easily distracted. It could be the television, my smartphone beeping or dinging, or lately, it’s been the demands of our little dog Baxter. That’s him below, isn’t he cute?
When I AM able to get my thoughts together, I find them returning again and again to herbalism and growing plants. As my interest in this topic has grown, so too, has my desire to take a class and get some education about not only plants, but how to take care of them using greenhouses.
What is a Greenhouse?
For those who aren’t familiar, greenhouses are structures (usually glass or plastic – as long as it’s transparent) that allow you to grow plants essentially year round. If you are a gardening enthusiast, they are a dream come true because you aren’t limited to the normal spring/summer months growing season to grow and harvest a crop. The greenhouse provides the right climate to continually grow the crop of your choice, provided you know enough about the plant in question.
From what I can tell, I’m in for quite an education. Some of the information that will be covered in the course will be logistics of placement of the greenhouse, glazing material, form, and heating/cooling to name just a few topics. Here’s a great article on the merits of having a greenhouse!
Three benefits of a greenhouse course:
- You can gain knowledge about growing a wide variety of herbs and plants and their care
- Harvesting herbal crops and creating remedies for personal healing and for others
- Utilizing plants/herbs for cooking and for cleaning
One thing is for sure, it will be a big undertaking! All of my endeavors with taking this class and the tasks it will ultimately create definitely goes in hand with an earlier post about the merits of using a planner. You can see that post here.
I’m sure the more I study about greenhouses, the more I’ll want to plant and grow herbs, so I’m sure there will more posts on this and related topics in the future. It’s exciting to begin new endeavors and allow yourself a chance to get involved with different subject matter.
Why not let 2017 be a year of stepping outside your comfort zone and experiencing new things? So often I hear people sell themselves short about what they are capable of and quickly dismiss possibilities because of their age. Life is short. Get out and explore!

Let this be the year you break out of the bud and blossom!
